Common Myths in Auto Detailing

By Les Chung

Myths. Heres a few:
1)Ferraris arent fast.
2) there is no money in Paintless Dent Removal
3) There was never a man on the moon.

Ok, so those ARENT myths, but, below you WILL find some great detailing myths...some you may be aware of, and others might just enlighten you..

Myth #1. Detailing is easy.
Wrong. No trip to Pep Boys for the wash bucket and soap will make you a detailer.

Myth #2. Washing a car is simple- anyone can do it.
Wrong. Anyone can ATTEMPT it, but many will cause damage to clearcoats, interior, engines, wheels and more.

Myth #3. Waxing a car is easy- just get some Turtle wax and away you go.
Wrong again. Waxing a car is a step by step procedure that when done wrong can again, cause DAMAGE. And Turtle Wax? Be real..

Myth #4. Coffee stains are impossible to get out.
Wrong Joseph. These are one of the easiest stains to remove.

Myth #5. Gum and Melted crayons are impossible to remove.
Yup, wrong. Im not going to tell how to do it here though!

Myth #6. Engine Detailing is simple- just get a hose or a pressure washer and you are set.
WRONG! Engine electronics are VERY sensitive these days, and you need to be careful when attempting to work near an engine. So, dont attempt unless you know the steps. HINT- pressure washers are not a good idea, pal!

Myth #7. Palmolive is a great car wash soap.
WRONG. Dish detergents will strip waxes and oils from your paint...drying it out and making it very ugly in no time.

Myth #8. Orbital buffers are great for waxing. Your hand is just as good, and orbital buffers can cause damage if youre not careful.

Myth #9. Hi Speed buffers are the way to apply wax like a pro.
Wrong, unless you like paint or clearcoat burnt off of your clients car. Try medium or low speed.

Myth #10. Waterspots cannot be removed.
Wrong-there are acids we use to remove them nicely.

Thats it for now. I could go on until next Tuesday with common myths, but we have some customer cars to tend to!
