Paintless Dent Removal was first developed on the Mercedes Benz factory assembly lines in the late 1940's and then tweaked and introduced to the general market in the early 1980's. It began as simple pick and filing on sheet metal to prepare damaged sheet metal for paint, as picking and filing still exists today in bodyshops, but two line technicians realized that using a shiny pole in the factory produced a reflection where they could locate and see their pick tool precisely behind the panel, in it's exact location. They then began to fashion a few tools that would access the damage and massaged the dents out using the reflection, without filing or using paint. After a few entrepreneurs realized the true potential of this unknown process, word soon spread of the "magical process" and Paintless Dent Removal was born. Technicians began sprouting up across the globe. It first migrated from Florida, to a few select technicians servicing luxury dealers across the US, with Paintless Dent Repair Technicians flying into every major city with a full load of repairs at each luxury dealer. Soon the company Dent Wizard was formed, and franchises were soon available. A company called Dent Masters was formed and came soon thereafter, also offering franchises, with Dent Pro and one PDR School that would allow individuals and dealers to be trained in the process (US Dent). A few independent technicians were also taught secretly and they took the process to other countries. From this point in the mid 1980's the process was exploding and technicians began to sprout up everywhere. To this day, a shortage of technicians still exists: demand continues to eclipse the supply of technicians worldwide.
